For nearly half a century the archipelago of Saint-Pierre-Et-Miquelon has borne the mark of the loss of a trawler and its 15-man crew: the Ravenel. A loss of life and ship stamped with the seal of secrecy, things unsaid, mysteries. The feeling remains that not everything was ever done to find the ship. There is a deep conviction that the real reasons for the tragedy had to be concealed. Against this background, two men are trying to locate the wreck…
In 1953 the Monique disappears with all hands between Maré and Noumea. There are 126 people aboard the tramp steamer, which serves the Loyalty Islands. The event remains the most terrible maritime tragedy and also one of the greatest mysteries of New Caledonia. Because the Monique disappeared without trace within a fairly restricted area. Rumours abound around the tragedy and even today the theory of a shipwreck is often rejected. The tragedy of the Monique still leaves a deep mark on Caledonian society. Against this background, an association is trying to find the Monique.
