In foregone times, when the winds howled, ships heading for Marseilles or Spain would take refuge in Port-Vendres, literally Port of Venus, sheltered in an indentation on the Catalan coast. Centuries ago, its favourable position conferred on Port-Vendres the strategic function of the link between East and West. Today, Port-Vendres is famous for wreck diving and the vine-covered hillsides that surround it. Two kilometres from Port-Vendres, Collioure was a thriving centre of trade at a time when Spain governed this part of the coast.
All creeks and crests, the Côte Vermeille enchants both divers and hikers. In the realm of Spain, the Costa Brava, the Wild Coast, lives up to its name. The Nature Park of Cape Creus is surely the jewel in its crown. Deep within its bay, Cadaquès must owe its unspoilt charm to Salvador Dali. The world-renowned artist fought to prevent the concrete swamping his village. The contrast with the Bay of Roses further south is striking. The proliferation of tourist residences leaves you giddy. The wide bay is the setting for the town of Empuriabrava in particular, one of the biggest residential marinas in the world!
