Moose hunting in Québec is an extremely popular activity, attracting nearly 200,000 hunters each year. What explains such enthusiasm? Most likely the fact that Québec is home to one of the finest moose populations in North America. This ancestral hunt is deeply rooted in family traditions—from tracking using signs, to calling techniques that lure the animals, and of course the meat, which is highly prized by Quebecers.Valérie Gauthier, in her forties, has always been passionate about hunting and fishing—a legacy passed down from her father and now shared with her children and husband.Jason Morneau-Tremblay, Dany Lavoie, and Éric Bellehumeur are undoubtedly Québec’s three leading moose hunting guides. We follow them into the Matane Wildlife Reserve in Gaspésie during the moose rutting season. Here, the hunting success rate is exceptional—82%.Deep in the boreal forest, we accompany these experts as they track and approach the king of the forest, in an ethical and respectful hunt filled with emotion.
