Once again this year, thousands of Arctic char swim up the crystal-clear, pure rivers of Greenland to spawn. According to reports, at Camp North—far from any civilization—the size of the fish is greater than anywhere else. After a long journey, Léo and his friends came to challenge them with fly fishing.

BIG FIVE ALONG THE RHÔNE

The term "Big Five" is commonly used in African safaris to describe the pursuit of the five most elusive and iconic animals. This concept is now transposed to the five most emblematic fish species of the Rhône River. From Lake Geneva to the river’s mouth, Cyril Gressot sets out to track pike, zander, catfish, leerfish, and tuna.On this journey from source to sea, Cyril surrounds himself with experts to help him meet the challenge. Arnaud Fileppi joins him on Lake Geneva. Franck Hiribarne guides him along the Rhône, and at the end of the trip, Cyril invites both friends to the river’s mouth to hunt leerfish and tuna.In these iconic landscapes of the Rhône Valley, the river’s rich fish life is well known among fishing enthusiasts. But catching these five species is no easy feat—especially since Cyril’s goal is to catch them exclusively using lures.

Far from clichés and public judgment, recreational fishing has become a trendy, uninhibited activity increasingly embraced by the younger generation.Figures from the National Federation confirm this, with 386,962 young people under the age of 18 holding a fishing license—representing 26% of all anglers in 2023.Fishing is gaining popularity thanks to social media, which portrays it as a modern and fashionable pastime.This “Fishing 2.0” seems to be giving a fresh boost to this age-old activity, while still honoring the traditions deeply rooted in its practice.

A FRIENDSHIP, FROM CARP TO CARP

Cédric Ducéré and Cyrille Lacoste, both from the Gers region, are 42 years old and childhood friends since kindergarten. They’ve been carp fishing together since the age of 8.Every year, they take a few days off to explore new rivers or ponds where they can pursue their passion for one of the most iconic cyprinid species. But for the first time in years, they’ll be fishing close to home, in search of record-breaking carp, approaching the riverbanks from rarely or never-fished spots.We’ll follow them over several days, at regular intervals—from baiting to bivouacking, from bivouacking to fishing—as they search for some of the most beautiful specimens in France, on a river well known to carp anglers but rarely recognized for its trophy fish.

SOUTH AFRICA, the True Wilderness

After a first trip to South Africa with Rory Kockott, a former international rugby player turned hunting guide, renowned French hunter Marc Monnet is eager to embark on another adventure alongside his experienced friend. For this new expedition, Rory has organized a tailor-made stay in a lesser-known region of South Africa: KwaZulu-Natal. This mountainous area offers the chance to hunt some of South Africa’s endemic species, such as the mountain reedbuck or the famous springbok — the iconic antelope that lent its name to the national rugby team.

YOUNG RIFLES

At 22, Lucas is a passionate and unconventional young hunter. Coming from a long line of hunters in the Gironde region, he represents a new generation that, far from screens and city noise, continues the traditions of his homeland. In a world where hunting is increasingly criticized and misunderstood, Lucas stands out for his mastery of various hunting techniques. Alongside his friends Enzo (23) and Aymeric (25), they form an inseparable trio, united by shared values and a deep love for nature. Throughout the hunting season, they pursue small game together: woodcock with pointing dogs, ducks from blinds, waders and geese on the lakes of Gironde. Together, they embody the future of a tradition they are determined to preserve, pass on, and defend.

CALL OF THE DECOY

The use of decoys in hunting is an age-old tradition. These instruments, which mimic the calls or songs of animals, are highly valued by hunters to attract specific game species. In France, decoys are mainly used for hunting various waterfowl species—ducks, geese, and other wildfowl. They can also be effective in attracting mammalian game such as foxes, roe deer, and wild boar.Mastering decoy use requires training and a deep understanding of animal behavior. Hunters must be able to reproduce sounds realistically to lure game effectively.These practices help pass down skills from generation to generation. The decoy is not merely a hunting accessory—it is a symbol of a shared passion for nature and wildlife.

Are there any similarities between rugby and duck hunting?David Banquet, former professional player turned coach and lifelong enthusiast of waterfowl hunting, firmly believes that the two disciplines share many common traits.From preparation and decision-making to commitment and teamwork, rugby and hunting are closely intertwined.Over the course of a season, between the fields of the Rugby Club of Bassin d’Arcachon and the marshes of the Médoc, David will show us that duck blind hunting and the world of rugby have much more in common than one might think.
