In Polynesia they have the vaa in their blood. The vaa is the traditional canoe… the vessel in which the ancestors of the Polynesians conquered many islands of the Pacific. Today it is the number 1 sport in Polynesia, practiced by more than 30,000 ardent enthusiasts. Among them, Papy Tavi. At 72 this rower is a warrior. He manages the Faa’a team, a club from the popular neighborhoods. He has trained hundreds of champions, who have gone on to become stars of canoeing. Among his latest recruits is the young Matéari, 18. In a few days, he will compete for the first time in a three-day canoe race out at sea, a superhuman effort over 126 km.
