Today it is the number 1 sport in Polynesia, practiced by more than 30,000 ardent enthusiasts. Among them, Papy Tavi. At 72 this rower is a warrior. He manages the Faa’a team, a club from the popular neighborhoods. He has trained hundreds of champions, who have gone on to become stars of canoeing. Among his latest recruits is the young Matéari, 18. In a few days, he will compete for the first time in a three-day canoe race out at sea, a superhuman effort over 126 km.
