Granville, nicknamed the “Monaco of the north” is built on a rocky promontory just like the principality. Some twenty kilometres to the north the Chausey Islands form the largest archipelago in Europe. At low tide, this former pirates’ lair reveals 365 islands; at high tide only 52. Paradise seekers come to moor here the time to sunbathe amidst the turquoise blue lagoons. The bay of Mont Saint-Michel stretches out like a desert slashed by the tides. Planted atop the spire of the abbey church, the archangel Michael, the gatekeeper of heaven, is said to have ordered the bishop of Avranches to build the sanctuary. Avranches. The city of four churches, one of whom houses the skull of the bishop who founded the abbey: the Saint Gervais basilica. Solemnly, it looks over the town… and watches over the Mont Saint-Michel. The prés salés salt meadows, stretches of grassland consisting of 27 species of plants took root on sedimentary deposits. This is where the famous prés salés sheep graze. An unusual shepherdess watches over this flock. She swapped her crook for a thoroughbred. Her dog obeys her every command. Together they manage 450 sheep by themselves with no problem.
