Le Croisic is said to date back to the mists of time, but it is the 15th century that the port took off, at a time when salt was worth its weight in gold.
The flight over the mediaeval city of Guérande is certainly worth its weight in gold. Its ramparts are among the best preserved in France. Guérande lies at the edge of the Brière Natural Park, which stretches out of sight.
The few villages lost amid the reeds that grow like couch grass seem to have been forgotten. The most astonishing of them, Fedrun, forms a heart in the middle of the desert of peat and water.
At the far end of the vast reserve, the Saint Nazaire bridge majestically spans the Loire. At its feet, the latest offspring of its shipyards monopolises the view. This 1000’ cruise liner will soon take to the sea fitted with the latest crazes of the ship owners, lost for ideas to attract the tourists…
The dunes that line the beaches of the Côte d’Amour as far as Le Croisic are thick with pine trees. They were planted there to prevent the sand from sweeping into the villas of the coastal resorts. But you will see that this was not without consequence…
