At the meeting point of the Channel and the River Rance, the mediaeval city of Saint-Malo lies imprisoned by its ramparts. Perched on its peninsula it seems to have been ripped from the mainland. With the discovery of the Americas, the city carved out a reputation throughout Brittany. Saint-Malo became the hub for ship owners of all kinds. Those that returned with their holds laden with riches built houses known as malouinières, indissociable from the local landscape. Our helicopter lands at one such property for a touching encounter. Further on we catch an aerial view of the listed villas of Dinard with their so-British charm. The turn of the century by the seaside…

In the Rance estuary another form of architecture catches the eye: that of the tide-driven mills. There are many on either side of the river. Nothing unusual about that: the Rance lies in the region of Europe that has the highest tidal ranges, where the tides produce electricity via the tidal power station.
