On Hiva Oa, the main island of the southern Marquesas archipelago, we meet Humu Kaimuko,. This young islander is very attached to the preservation of his culture. He is our guide across the island, showing us the places that are the most important to him.

Stone, as a genuine witness of the past, and wood, as a construction material full of potential, are both omnipresent in the lives of the inhabitants. And this to such a point that David Fabre, a stringed instrument maker from Bordeaux, France, settled down on Hiva Oa to craft guitars exclusively from local wood. His instruments are appreciated the world over, for their beautiful sound quality.

But there is also another dimension on Hiva Oa: that of dreams. After a few days on the island, one is taken over by its dream-like atmosphere. The sea, the rocks, the centuries-old trees, the people, the rhythm of life, the traditional songs and dances…

It is very likely that Jacques Brel and Paul Gauguin, who both decided to be buried for eternity on the very island of Hiva Oa, could only have agreed.
