On the shores of Lake Leman, deep in the Alps, Lavaux presents an unmatched winegrowing landscape. A tiny island wedged in between Lausanne and Vevey, it is crisscrossed with 400 kilometers of walls that stack up some 10,000 terraces over 40 levels on slopes of 450. This fascinating landscape has been fashioned by man over 900 years and it has produced an astonishing culture: many families have been growing grapes for five centuries and a festival, held once in a generation, celebrates the winegrowers before hundreds of thousands of spectators. The Lavaux vineyard has thus become an integral part of Swiss identity.
