In the low-angled light of early morning the coast slips by, islets and coves lying open to our gaze. Here, Fort de France, a sprawling city, a sort of Naples of the Caribbean. There, Saint-Pierre, wiped off the map by the most deadly volcanic eruption to date. Today the city is rebuilt and cleared of its ashes. Ever since, the Volcanological Observatory set in the heights of the former capital of Martinique keeps watch over Mount Pelée.
