800,000 people live on the island of Reunion. Soon there will be a million.
Faced with this demographic explosion, this French island in the Indian Ocean is beginning to suffer the same problems as the major conurbations of Europe: congested roads, increased urbanisation.
At the cost of a giant construction site, the Tamarind Road should, in a few years time, ease the traffic on Reunion. Meanwhile all is not lost: in the "Highs" of the island, accessible along by long walks or by helicopter when it's a question of taking supplies up to the populations of the islets a gentler, quieter existence continues. A far cry from the tumult of the "Lows" along the coast.
From the village of Mafate on the Peak of the Furnace by way of St-Pierre and St-Denis this is the log of a flight over an island that has nothing uniform about it.
