They call it the Territory. Still more words tell you much about this country. As if this confetti of the Republic, on the other side of the world from metropolitan France, had its own vocabulary. So, under the letter C, you have Caldoche. They’re white and have lived in these mountainous lands for several generations. Under the letter C, we have Canaque, which is also written with two K’s… as in Kanakie. They were the first inhabitants of New Caledonia. They hunt, fish and live in tribes: the other face of this New Caledonia that reminded James Cook, the Scotsman, so much of his childhood that he gave it that name. Today, the territory is one giant mountain block, heavy with mines and effort.
